Niels Bohr Institute Unit of the Center for Colloid and Interface Science
At the Niels Bohr Institute we research and teach within a broad spectrum of physics areas: Astrophysics, Biophysics, eScience, Solid State Physics, Geophysics, Quantum Physics and Particle Physics. research activities of Lise Arleth and Kell Mortensen represent a great example of the application of the physics discipline into the area of surface and colloid chemistry, with the focus on small-angle scattering (X-rays and neutrons, i.e., SAXS and SANS) for investigations of various self-assembling and colloidal systems of biological, biotechnological or pharmaceutical relevance.
Section for X-ray and Neutron Science
Kell Mortensen's main research interests lie within the borderline between physics, materials science and biology and with a large research expertise and long-lasting activity within polymer-based systems. Main focus has been on small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering, often combined with rheology.
Lise Arleth has special focus on solution small-angle scattering (X-rays and neutrons, i.e., SAXS and SANS) for investigations of various self-assembling and colloidal systems of biological, biotechnological or pharmaceutical relevance. This includes advanced sample preparation, instrumentation and strong expertise in advanced data analysis. Typical targets are Lipid-protein structures, including nanodiscs and high density lipoproteins, and the use of these for investigating membrane proteins.
Both Kell Mortensen and Lise Arleth have since many years maintained a strong engagement in the European Spallation Source (ESS) and Max-IV projects. This includes science policy for securing optimal instrumentation for biological and soft matter samples. In continuation of this, the LA group has developed a line of more industry targeted research activities within X-ray and neutron scattering to contribute to that also Danish industry will benefit from the upcoming ESS and Max-IV facilities.
